Wertek AI for utilities

This page describes how the Wertek AI platform applies to the utilities sector: generators, cogenerators, energy distributors, qualified users, and utility infrastructure operators (hospital, campus, and data center service plants). It is an applicability guide, not a catalog of executed projects.

Market context

The electricity and utilities sector in Mexico and Latin America faces a double pressure. On one side, aging grid and infrastructure assets — transformers, substations, capacitor banks, auxiliary equipment — whose failure does not stop a production line: it cuts off customers across an entire area or an entire hospital. On the other, a regulatory framework that keeps tightening: Mexico's Grid Code (Código de Red) requires load centers to demonstrate power factor, imbalance, and harmonic distortion within limits, measured at minute-level granularity, and qualified users and cogenerators need reliable metering to operate in the market. Add the operational reality: substations and remote installations with little or no visibility between crew visits, and a generation of substation engineers retiring faster than they are replaced.

Sector pain points

The pain points Wertek AI addresses in utilities, in the words of those who run the infrastructure:

  • Aging grid assets with unknown condition. Transformers and substation equipment with decades of service, whose real state is known only at the annual inspection — if there is one.
  • Zero visibility between visits. Substations and remote sites where an anomalous condition can build for weeks before anyone passes by.
  • Grid Code compliance in the dark. Regulation measures in 5-minute intervals; whoever only sees their monthly bill cannot demonstrate or manage compliance.
  • Capacitor banks that fail silently. Blown fuses, degraded cells, or resonance with non-linear loads go unnoticed until power factor drops or the bank fails.
  • Neglected rotating auxiliaries. Pumps, fans, cooling towers, and service-plant compressors: less glamorous than the transformer, just as capable of taking down the operation.
  • Fragmented history. Each asset has its life split across logbooks, third-party reports, and crew memory.

The Wertek solution

For utilities, Wertek AI combines its modules over a single digital asset identity:

  • Energy and power quality: the core module for this vertical. Multi-brand metering (including Schneider Electric's ION 8650, LAPEM-approved), power factor, THD, imbalance, and per-phase voltages/currents at 5-minute granularity or better, Grid Code compliance monitoring with report, and automatic detection of bidirectional meters with generation.
  • Capacitor bank monitoring: a dedicated panel per bank with electrical condition indicators — early detection of degradation before it shows in power factor or in a failure.
  • Diagnostics and condition monitoring: wireless vibration and temperature sensors on rotating auxiliaries (pumps, fans, cooling towers), plus on-demand diagnostics with the phone: thermography of switchgear and connections, and ultrasound — including partial discharge as a supported capture application.
  • CMMS and field service: work orders and crew visits with photographic evidence, on top of the asset's history.
  • Drive Service Intelligence: for pumping and ventilation variable frequency drives, a service plan by serial number even without a permanent connection; live status and alarms when connectivity is available.

What Wertek does NOT do in utilities: it is not a SCADA or protection system (it does not trip breakers or control the grid — it observes, diagnoses, and documents), it does not replace regulated fiscal/commercial metering, and it does not manufacture meters or sensors: it integrates those of multiple brands.

Typical assets and sensors

Equipment Wertek AI is designed to monitor in utilities and service infrastructure, and with which modality:

System Typical points Modality
Substation / load center Per-circuit metering, power quality Energy and PQ (multi-brand meters)
Capacitor banks Electrical condition per bank Dedicated monitoring panel
Transformers Load, imbalance, external thermal condition Energy + thermography; dissolved gas analysis (DGA) ROADMAP
Variable frequency drives Status, alarms, electrical parameters Drive Service Intelligence
Auxiliary pumps and fans Motor, bearings Continuous vibration + temperature
Cooling towers Fan, water temperatures Vibration + temperature
Switchgear and connections Hot spots, partial discharge Phone-based thermography and ultrasound

The modalities are those of the platform: 10-brand energy meters via gateway or direct cellular connectivity, wireless vibration/temperature sensors, and phone-based capture. Detail in energy and diagnostics.

Compliance and standards

In utilities, Wertek AI helps generate evidence against these frameworks:

  • Grid Code (Mexico): the platform includes a dedicated section that compares five-minute measurements against the regulatory limits — power factor (0.97 required of medium-voltage load centers ≥ 1 MW since April 2026), voltage imbalance ≤ 2% and current imbalance ≤ 15%, THD per IEEE-519 — and generates the compliance report. It is continuous evidence, at the same granularity the regulation measures with.
  • IEEE-519 (harmonics): the THD limits of power quality monitoring are evaluated against this reference.
  • IEC 61850: integration with substation environments based on this standard is under development ROADMAP.
  • ISO 55001 (asset management): the digital record per asset — hierarchy, condition, work orders — builds the documentary foundation an implementation requires. Dedicated module under development ROADMAP.

Reference case

Reference case in utilities in progress — Wertek has not yet published a case for this sector. If you operate electrical or service infrastructure, contact Wertek for a demo with your own assets; Grid Code monitoring over a real load center is an excellent starting point. Published cases from other sectors are in success stories and example applications. </content>
